Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi says smoking dagga inside school premises will not be tolerated after a video of Leondale High School learners who were smoking dagga went viral online. Lesufi said 36 of the learners have been suspended and an urgent disciplinary hearing has been arranged for Sunday, 24 April.

Lesufi said they want to who is selling and distributing the dagga.

In the video, Leondale High learners proudly pose while others blow the smoke toward the camera. Others are seen dancing and acting weirdly. This comes only weeks after several learners from Gauteng schools have reportedly been hospitalized after consuming space cakes. According to the Gauteng Education Department, learners from Randfontein High School in the West Rand and Mamellong Secondary School in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni were hospitalized on Thursday, 7 April 2022, and Saturday, 9 April 2022 respectively.

It was established that these learners consumed ‘space cakes’ sold by another Grade 12 learner. The learner was suspended as a result of breaking the school’s code of conduct and endangering the lives of his fellow learners. Lesufi urged learners to refrain from purchasing or consuming unknown substances that put their health and lives at risk.
